Pointon resident calls for a faster response from authorities following flood damage to homes in the area

A villager is calling for help from local authorities who took ‘too long’ to present a flood report – which she believes could have reduced damage in the area.

Leanne Mansell, of Pointon, is hoping the authorities will be putting a plan in place to stop flooding from happening in the future – after extreme weather conditions battered parts of Lincolnshire earlier this week.

She said: “After the village was flooded last year, the community decided to set up an emergency flood group and we were able to secure some funding which allowed us to obtain sandbags, shovels and sand.

“As this year’s flooding happened overnight, we weren’t as prepared and a lot of residents in the village woke up in the morning and were already under water – we also didn’t anticipate it would happen so soon after.

“At 7am, myself and some other members started filling the sand bags, pumping houses, moving families to safer places, shutting roads off and diverting traffic.

“By the afternoon it subsided however, Billingborough then started flooding, so we began distributing the sandbags to help people over there.

“It was a real community effort but more needs to be done to stop it from happening again.”

Luckily Leanne’s family home was not affected by the flooding, however one of her friends, who also lives in Pointon, were among those suffered damage.

After the area was hit by bad weather last year, Leanne and lots of other residents were hoping they wouldn’t have to go through the same thing again.

She added: “The Environment Agency did a survey of the surrounding areas to see what needed to be done with future flooding – but nothing has happened.

“At the last parish council meeting in November last year, the local authority read out the same report – it had taken 11 months for them to pull it all together, which is too long because a month after the report was read out, we were flooded again.

“Some residents are very knowledgeable and have shared their own suggestions about dredging the dykes and digging deeper to help the water get out of the village, however we would need permission to do it ourselves.”
