Police arrest driver moments after being abandoned by their mates

A driver caught the attention of police after being abandoned by their passengers. Neighbourhood officers were patrolling Leigh on Sunday (January 12) when they noticed suspicious activity on Butts Street.

According to Greater Manchester Police, the car came to a sudden halt on the road. The passengers then all fled the scene, leaving the driver on their own in the car.

An image shared by GMP Wigan shows a silver Kia Picanto which appears to have stopped in the road. Officers spoke to the driver and found them to be unfit for the road.

They were arrested on suspicion of drug driving, GMP says. A spokesperson for GMP Wigan said: “Officers patrolling hot spot areas have come across a vehicle driving down Butts Street which suddenly stopped and the passengers have fled from the vehicle leaving the driver behind.

“Driver spoken to and presented unfit to be in control of a motor vehicle. Roadside test carried out and confirmed to have drugs in their system.

“Off to custody for evidential sample. Drug driving is one of the main causes of serious injuries and deaths on the region’s roads.”
