Police issue update as woman’s body pulled from Brighouse canal

An elderly woman’s body has been recovered from a canal in Brighouse.

West Yorkshire Police, along with the fire and ambulance services, were called to Atlas Mill Road in Brighouse at just after 9am this morning. This followed a caller reporting seeing a body in the canal.

The emergency services at the scene located the body of a woman from the water. The woman, who was aged in her 70s, was then recovered from the water, and an investigation has been ongoing.

West Yorkshire Police said: “Police are appealing for information after a woman’s body was found in water in Brighouse.

“Emergency services were called to the canal near Atlas Mill Road at just after 9am this morning ( Saturday January 4th) by a caller reporting seeing a body in water there.

“Police, ambulance and fire services attended and located the body of an adult woman.

“The woman, who was aged in her 70s, was recovered from the water and enquiries have been ongoing at the scene.”

Eyewitnesses saw at least two fire engines, along with crews, at the scene earlier today.

DI Jenny Haigh of Calderdale CID, said: “We are continuing to investigate following the very sad discovery of this woman in water today.

“Officers have now identified her and have made relatives aware of this tragic development.

“There are not thought to be any suspicious circumstances in the matter, but we would appeal for anyone who saw an elderly female fall into water in the nearby area or who can assist enquiries in any way to contact us.”
