Police say car thieves are breaking into homes in West Fife

Police said a property in Blairhall was the latest to be broken into with forensic teams and detectives drafted in to try and catch the crooks.

And the force have given out security advice, asking locals to ensure doors and windows are properly locked – even when someone is in the house – that alarm systems and CCTV cameras are working and, if possible, to use a faraday box to prevent ‘keyless’ car thefts.

The West Fife and Coastal Villages crime report for December said: “There have been a number of housebreakings to residential properties in the geographical area around West Fife recently, including an instance where a residential property in Blairhall was broken into within the last month.

“Enquiries are ongoing into this offence and all other similar incidents, including the use of additional patrols and the expertise of scenes of crime officers and detectives from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID).”

It went on: “A large number of housebreakings result in the theft of a motor vehicle, in many instances the theft of said vehicle appears to be the primary reason for the break-in to occur in the first place.

“To maximise vehicle security, please ensure vehicles are locked, using a locked garage to store vehicles wherever possible.

“Keys for vehicles should ideally be kept in a secure place within the house – try to avoid storing these in obvious places such as directly inside the front door.

“A more complex theft of cars with ‘keyless entry’ involves cloning the signal sent between the car and the genuine key. To avoid this occurring, consideration should be given to storing keys in a faraday box (effectively a shield to block to electromagnetic fields) for security.

“These are widely available available and relatively inexpensive.”
