Police uncover large cannabis farm below city centre Travelodge

A large cannabis farm has been uncovered below a city centre Travelodge. Gwent Police confirmed that its officers found a large-scale cannabis farm inside a disused building on Bridge Street, Newport, at around 11pm on Thursday, January 2.

According to the police force, they seized around 2,000 cannabis plants and a mobile phone. Gwent Police said they were initially called by the South Wales Fire and Rescue Service about a motorcycle on fire and then noticed a stench of cannabis coming from a nearby building.

When officers carried out a search of the building’s ground floor, they found a large-scale cultivation together with cannabis growing equipment. A police cordon has now been set up in the area while engineers have disconnected the power supply to the building. For the latest Newport news, sign up to our newsletter here.
