Positive steps to take in 2025 from Warrington Borough Council

The council has offered advice on how people can boost their health and wellbeing.

A spokesperson said: New year can feel like you need to change overnight, but we know it’s not that easy.

“Breaking old habits and creating healthy ones can be challenging and hard at times. However, it’s not impossible.

“Being kind to yourself and seeking support to aid your goals can be really helpful. A good place to start is considering what motivates you and what positive things you can add to your life, rather than take away.

“Try to set yourself small, achievable goals that you can reach and then build on gradually.”

The council says examples include enjoying new experiences, meeting new people along the way, volunteering, and more such as:

  • Eat well – Eating a healthy, balanced diet is an important part of maintaining good health and can help you feel your best. It can help you maintain a healthy weight, keep your bones and joints strong, ensure you have enough energy and much more. Information and guidance around eating a healthy, balanced diet can be found on the NHS website. If you need help with food, there are a number of foodbank and pantries across Warrington, which you can view on our cost of living support page
  • Get active – Try to get yourself moving more this year through doing things you enjoy. Physical activity is not only good for your body, but it’s also great for your mind. Make use of the parks and open spaces in Warrington, join a LiveWire gym, or visit the Better Health Website for ways you can keep active
  • Take part in Dry January – Cutting back on drinking alcohol will help you have better sleep, save money, and improve your mental health. Visit the Alcohol change website for more information and support. Or download the lower my drinking app
  • Quit Smoking – Stopping smoking is one of the best things you can do for your health. You’ll have more energy, feel healthier and also save money. Make 2025 the year you quit. Help and support with quitting smoking can be found on LiveWire’s website
  • Look after your mental health – We all deserve to enjoy life and feel good about ourselves but sometimes life can be tough. If you think you need help with your mental health, visit Warrington’s mental health support directory – Happy? Ok Sad?

In addition, the NHS’s ‘five steps to mental wellbeing’ provides advice on range of health and wellbeing steps you can take, such as connecting with others, learning new skills, practicing mindfulness and acts of giving and kindness.

Evidence suggests that these steps can help you to feel more positive, improve your mental health and wellbeing and able you to get the most out of life.

Cllr Maureen McLaughlin, cabinet member for health, wellbeing and social care, said: “The New Year can be a great time for a fresh start and to think about ways we can improve our health and wellbeing. Even making small changes can help!

“There is lots of help and support out there for people who want to take positive steps to improve their health and wellbeing, not just during January, but all year round.”
