Seeing the impact it had on that person’s life, and realising that there were so few employment opportunities for people with learning disabilities in the area, Ben took decisive action and Bridge Creative was born.
Six years on, Bridge Creative has supported over 200 people with learning disabilities and autistic adults across County Durham and Darlington by working with them to improve their confidence and gain real work experience and skills.
Described as a real ambassador for inclusion, Ben shines a light on the value of people with learning disabilities.
One of Ben’s many triumphs is being part of the team that brings Bishop Auckland Christmas Town to life – an event described as fabulous by visitors.
Picking up the award after a roar of applause, Ben said: “We support so many guys who are in employment who should be up here collecting this Public Service Award.
“They are out there in the community delivering this public service by working as lifeguards and other jobs. This award is for them.
“Seeing people in their roles and showing them what they can achieve by being in work is incredible.
“They are the most inspiring, dedicated, motivated workforce you will ever meet.”
Ben then added, “If anyone has any jobs going…”, which garnered a few laughs.
