Reminder of council tax doubling on long-term empty or second homes

The case is also the same for residents that have a home that has been empty long-term.

Residents have reported being sent letters reminding them of the 100 per cent premium, which will come into effect from April 1.

The law change was announced in a bid to free up housing stock for residents who may have been priced out due to limited supply.

Around 150 councils, including Warrington, are believed to be imposing the premium.

The letter residents received states: “I am writing to you as according to the council tax records, you are the owner of the above property, which is classed as a long-term empty home or a second home.

“From April 1, 2024, a long-term empty home is defined as a home which is both unoccupied and substantially unfurnished for a continuous period of at least a year, after which a 100 per cent premium is due.

“Second homes are defined as properties which are substantially furnished and have no resident (i.e. not a person’s sole or main home).

“From April 1, 2025, any home that is not your main residence and is substantially furnished will be charged a 100 per cent premium, meaning you will have to pay double the amount of council tax you would normally pay.

“The Government has made regulations to provide exceptions to these premiums, which will come into effect from April 1, 2025.”
