Roadworks resume on Sydenham Bypass and six other key routes

In October the Department of Infrastructure (DfI) said it would be suspending non-essential works on key Belfast routes from November 25, as it had done in previous years.

Resurfacing works on the Sydenham Bypass in east Belfast resumed today.

DfI has said works will continue during weeknights and selected weekends with the aim of minimising disruption.

Roadworks on the bypass began in October as part of a £3.8m resurfacing scheme, but following many days of heavy traffic congestion were paused in the run up to Christmas.

The Belfast-bound carriageway will be closed between Tillysburn and the M3 on weeknights, from 10pm to 6am, Monday to Thursday.

Four additional weekend closures will take place from 10pm on Friday to 6am on Monday, with the first closure scheduled for this Friday, January 10 until Monday, January 13.

All weekend closures and completion dates are weather dependant and the DfI has said it “recognises the impact of the initial phase of works and has suitable traffic management and diversions in place”.

“When works recommence road users should plan ahead, allow extra time for journeys, and check TrafficwatchNI, external for updates.”

Other roadworks across Northern Ireland have also resumed.

During this period citybound traffic on the Saintfield Road will be reduced to one lane.

The Knockbracken Road road will be closed for a five month period until the final layout is in operation.

A 30mph speed limit remains on the main Saintfield in the vicinity of the works.
