Roslin Beach Hotel bidding to have restriction changed

The Roslin Beach Hotel on Thorpe Esplanade is bidding to have a restriction on its opening hours for “non-residents” changed as part of a major revamp.

Its £10million extension will create extra rooms, a spa and more parking.

Current planning permission, granted in 2022, states non-hotel guests must leave the extension by 11pm. The hotel applied to have that changed to 1am on Fridays and Saturdays, and 2am on certain holidays.

This bid was rejected in December due to concerns around noise. Now, the hotel is suggesting hours of operation until midnight every day, and 1am for New Year’s Eve.

Currently, the main hotel can stay open until 1am for non-guests, but the extension would be restricted to 11pm.

Managing director Jacqui Dallimore previously branded the restrictions “unfair” due to the impact they would have on charity events and weddings.

In a letter to the council in support of the latest submission, Jacqui said: “Restricting our hours of operation means people would choose other venues that don’t have such restrictions.

“The Seven Hotel, for example which was granted permission in 2015, is not subject to any similar planning condition restricting its hours of operation.

“The hotel has been operating successfully for many years with the current trading hours and our relationship with our neighbours is generally positive.

“I am very keen to get on and implement our new scheme.”

It is hoped the expansion, which will see part of the hotel demolished and replaced with a three-storey extension and five plush new rooms, would cement the Roslin as a “jewel in the crown” of the seafront.

Independent Thorpe Bay councillor, Martin Terry said while he values the Roslin, he must represent the concerns of residents about noise.

He said: “I respect the hotel and it is a good flagship business for the city and for tourists as well but we cannot ignore the concerns of residents.

“The top concern is noise and disturbance and I made the point at the last meeting that it is in a quiet residential area and residents worry about the noise as people leave late.

“Residents want protection from noise understandably, and let us see what evolves out of compromise.”
