The project will begin at the bus station and go towards Crossgate Peth. It will include removing temporary bus stops and refurbishing footpaths and street furniture.
This work is expected to renovate the North Road area of Durham and improve the roads and paths around the new bus station.
Works, which began on Monday (January 13), are part of a two-phase plan from Durham County Council, which saw the first phase completed in October 2024.
To reduce disruption, the council said that work will be carried out with traffic signs in place.
The second phase will focus on Crossgate Peth, North Road, and Milburngate, for a total of seven weeks.
During this time buses will only be able to turn left out of the station.

Some bus services will be running revised routes while the work is being carried out, with notices to be published to advise passengers of changes.
A spokesperson for Go North East said: “The next phase of the North Road and Millburngate refurbishment works will begin on Monday, January 13, and will continue for several weeks. Buses will be unable to serve stops at Millburngate all day on Mondays to Fridays while the works continue. Please catch your bus from the bus station.
“Please note on weekends buses will operate normal routes, serving stops at Millburngate.”
Anthea Smith, Durham County Council’s highway services manager, added: “Works have started this week as part of the second phase of plans to refurbish the North Road area of Durham.
“The enhancements, which will help give North Road a more modern and welcoming first impression to visitors, will begin from the bus station towards Crossgate Peth, and include the removal of temporary bus stops, and refurbishing footpaths and street furniture.
“We will also be resurfacing North Road, including Crossgate Peth and towards Milburngate roundabout, helping to attract residents, visitors, and shoppers to the city and reinforce Durham’s standing as a thriving place to visit.”
