Daniel Smith, 36, of Cranham Drive, Warndon and brother David were originally arrested on suspicion of attempted murder following the attack which saw dad-of-one Mr Shaw, 34.

However, Daniel Smith was ultimately jailed for wounding with intent after the stabbing while David Smith received a community penalty for affray.

The video shows one attacker, David Smith, grabbing Mr Shaw in a headlock as the other (Daniel Smith) attacks him with a knife before the boxer and promoter struggles free and flattens both men with a barrage of heavy punches. At one point someone can be heard shouting ‘Jon! Jon! Jon!’ and a witness shouts ‘he’s got a knife!’

Mr  Shaw was admitted to Worcestershire Royal Hospital in Worcester, suffering a collapsed lung after he was stabbed through the chest. Mr Shaw has never co-operated with the police in the investigation against his assailants but has condemned the use of knives on social media.

The city coach believes years of boxing training helped save his life that day, enabling him to fight off his attackers before he was even more seriously injured and illustrates the importance of self-defence training in modern society.

Daniel Smith was jailed for 50 months for wounding with intent, possession of a blade and criminal damage at Worcester Crown Court on January 3 following the attack on June 1 last year.

A co-defendant David Smith, 34, of Raleigh Close, Dines Green, Worcester was given a community order for 12 months for affray with conditions of a mental health treatment requirement and 10 rehabilitation activity requirement days.

Mr Shaw has never co-operated with the police investigation and declined to provide any personal statement or victim statement to the police.

He did respond to the sentence on his public Facebook page, likening his attackers to ‘the Chuckle Brothers’.

Mr Shaw wrote: “How to defend yourself against The Chuckle Brothers trying to end your life with  knives. I’d already been stabbed at this point. With all that said, I still managed to get the one bathed and tucked into bed nice and early.”

He added: “Imagine doubling up on a man with knives and getting flattened. This shows the importance of self defence in today’s society. As although there is no place for this, unfortunately it happens.

“When you put into context that this was over nothing more than a Facebook post, it makes you wonder where peoples’ pride is.”

Judge Nicolas Cartwright sentenced Smith to 44 months for wounding, one month concurrent for damaging property and six months consecutive for having an article with a blade or point – a total sentence of 50 months).

Although the judge ruled Smith a dangerous offender, no extended sentence was imposed and the 50-month sentence will run consecutive to a sentence he is already serving.
