Shropshire man, 35, hacked social media accounts and ‘shared private content with like-minded individuals’

A man who hacked into social media accounts and copied “the most personal” images and videos caused his victims “significant harm and distress”. Adam Piggott then shared the private content he had illegally taken with an online community of like-minded individuals.

An investigation by West Mercia Police’s Cyber Crime Unit found the 35-year-old hacked into social media accounts belonging to six victims between 2019 and 2021. Piggott admitted seven offences under the Computer Misuse Act at Shrewsbury Crown Court.

Piggot, of Lime Street, Shrewsbury, was sentenced to 10 months in prison, suspended for 18 months, on Friday, January 10. He was also given a five-year Criminal Behaviour Order, which will restrict and monitor his behaviour and online activity.

Following the sentencing, PC Tom Pawley, from the Cyber Crime Unit, said: “The images and videos which have been taken are the most personal and Piggott’s actions have caused significant harm and distress to his victims. The victims’ unwavering courage in coming forward to co-operate with the police has been nothing short of remarkable.

“Their bravery in providing statements and supporting the investigation has been crucial to ensuring Piggott’s sentencing. We take hacking offences seriously and this case demonstrates our commitment to ensuring those who engage in illegal cyber activities are held accountable.”
