Stockton drug addict jailed for harassing his grandmother

James Rollinson has a long track record of hassling his elderly grandmother for cash to fund his addiction, Teesside Crown Court heard.

The 31-year-old turned up on her doorstep in four occasions to pester her for cash despite being subject of a restraining order to protect her from his behaviour.

Albany Kidd, prosecuting, said Rollinson was released from prison on November 2 last year and went to her home where she gave him cash to go away.

Miss Kidd said he then turned up on November 11and took £40 from her and took some food items from her home.

The court heard how the grandmother was then contacted multiple times via an unknown mobile phone before turning up again on November 13 when she again handed over another £40.

Rollinson, of High Street, Stockton, pleaded guilty to four breaches of the restraining order when he appeared in court.

Nicci Horton, mitigating, said her client and his grandmother were in a spiral of behaviour as he continued to struggle with his drug addiction and his grandmother was hoping that he will change his ways.

“The defendant is well aware that the only option that the court is custody given his antecedent history,” she said.

“He is well aware of the issues that his grandmother has and he wants to say that he is not targeting her due to her vulnerabilities, his grandmother is the person who raised him as a child and is the only family he has.

“He accepts that he goes to visit her, he accepts that he asks her for money and he has specifically asked me to say that she waits for some time before calling the police.”

Judge Timothy Stead locked the repeat offender up for a total of 16 months as he continues to ‘put his own needs first’.

“It is depressing to see you offend so quickly following your release,” he said.

“You committed repeated offences of harassment; your record is frankly to long to for me to read out at this point.

“You were not only in breach of the order when you went to her house as soon as you were released and she gave you money to get you to go away but you went back again – four times in total.”
