Teesside thug slashed teenager with zombie knife in burglary

James Coomber and an unknown accomplice launched the attack on the sleeping teenager after letting themselves into his east Cleveland home.

The pair, both wearing balaclavas, stole a PlayStation, mobile phone and other personal belongings during the violent raid on June 4 last year at an address in Marske.

Teesside Crown Court heard how the victim recognised the defendant as his mother’s former boyfriend as he brutally slashed at his legs with the large knife.

David Ward, prosecuting, said: “They were asking him ‘where is the stuff’ repeatedly and he was punched more than once.

“He recognised Coomber’s physical features and voice, he knew him because he had been in a relationship with his mother some time ago.

“While the unknown male was attacking the teenager, Coomber slashed him to the shin twice with the knife and there was a small wound to his back.”

The court heard how the day before the aggravated burglary Coomber was involved in another violent incident on Whitby Close, Skelton.

Mr Ward said Coomber was the driver of a car believed to have rammed a house before an altercation erupted in the street but the occupants would not co-operate with the police when they arrived on the scene.

He said shortly after the altercation, Coomber had crashed the car into an oncoming vehicle when he was overtaking on a corner.

The court heard how the defendant was eventually arrested when he was found hiding in a tree in Redcar after taking a quantity of drugs in an attempt to take his own life.

Coomber, of no fixed abode, pleaded guilty to aggravated burglary, possession of a bladed article dangerous driving, affray, driving without a licence and failing to stop after an accident.

John Nixon, mitigating, said: “He has a record that does not do him credit and he understands that – he does also understand that he is facing a lengthy custodial sentence.

“It was a bad few days, to put it mildly. He understands how appalling his actions were.”

Judge Edward Legard branded Coomber a dangerous offender as he imposed an extended prison sentence on the 30-year-old.

“You broke into the home of the teenager, it is clear to me that he had been sought out by you and your accomplice as an easy target, perhaps with the intention of securing some drugs to feed your habit,” he said.

“What you did that evening was unconscionable, it was unforgivable. You preyed upon and assaulted a young man who had every right to feel safe in his own home.

“It must have been an acutely frightening experience.”
