The names and faces of more than 30 shoplifters sentenced in police crackdown on high street crime

In March 2024, Lancashire Police launched an operation to crackdown on shoplifting on the county’s high streets.

Operation Vulture set out to catch thieves who visited to help themselves to goods from stores in Blackpool, Preston, Blackburn and across the county.

When LancsLive spoke to business owners it was clear the operation was needed. They described organised groups targeting their shops using distraction techniques to steal high value items.

Some shoplifters targeted charity shops and others were prolific, making repeat trips to big name chain stores. To date, more than 30 people have been sentenced as a result of the operation.

Inspector Dave Byrne from Preston’s Neighbourhood Policing team said: “Shoplifting can have a significant negative impact on businesses, shop staff and our local communities. This is a really positive result which will hopefully provide reassurance that we take this crime very seriously and will continue to work closely with our partners to ensure that shoplifters are brought to justice.”

Operation Vulture is Lancashire Constabulary’s response to shoplifting across the county, backed by Lancashire’s Police and Crime Commissioner Clive Grunshaw.

The operation sees dedicated officers undertaking hotspot patrolling, increasing their visibility in targeted areas and creating strong partnerships with retailers across the county to better share intelligence, get a deeper understanding of retail crime and identify more offenders.
