Many Londoners try to get as far away as possible from the hustle and bustle of the city centre. However, there is an area in Zone 2 which residents say is quiet and good for families.
This is the Isle of Dogs, nestled between Canary Wharf’s modern skyline and Greenwich’s traditional charm. Residents praise it as the best of both worlds.
Teresa Martin, 56, lives closer to Canary Wharf but really loves the isle’s greenery. She said: “I love it because of the canals, the nature, the parks, the farm; it’s a contrast of modern and old – not like the chaos in central London.”

Amiutha, 26, recently moved to the area and already prefers it to other parts of London. She added: “I’ve lived in Wembley and Ealing Broadway, and compared to those, it’s really quiet, with friendly people and good transport.”
Long-time residents like Mitchell Lee think that the growing population may make it less tranquil, but he still thinks it’s a great area for families. He said: “It’s changed a lot, with more buildings and people, but I still love it. And all my nieces and nephews also enjoy it because of the excellent schools.”
Arpan Patel, a resident for five years, sees the area’s changes as positive. He added: “When I moved here, there wasn’t much to do. Now, there’s so much more, I’ve seen the area grow.” Arpan also believes the area is safe. He said: “It’s quieter at night and feels safer than West London.”

Henry Turner, 35, views the Isle of Dogs as an “up-and-coming” area but acknowledges a major issue. He said: “There’s a clear divide. Canary Wharf is a financial hub, but some parts of the isle are still quite poor; it’s quite strange.”
Mohammad Khan, 22, has lived on the isle his whole life and believes the wealth disparity contributes to safety concerns. He added: “It’s quiet unless you go near Crossharbour. There’s been an increase in stabbings, mostly youth-related. For me, I feel safe, but not everyone does.”
The Isle of Dogs remains a favourite across its residents for its mix of tranquillity and urban convenience. While most agree that the area is evolving, many are left to wonder whether these changes will enhance or harm the community’s unique character.
