Translink suspends services to part of Derry after ‘repeated attacks’

Buses have been suspended in an area of Derry following “repeated attacks” by young people.

SDLP Derry City and Strabane councillor Brian Tierney said that attacks on buses in the Shantallow area are costing the local community “vital services”.

Foyle Metro services 12 and 13, in the Slievemore and Skeoge areas, are being withdrawn after 7pm following recent attacks in the Bradley Pass area.

Councillor Tierney said: “These repeated attacks on buses in the Bradley Pass area have led to Translink withdrawing these services that many people in the Shantallow area rely on.

“Late night buses are vital for people returning from work or the city centre and they will now be forced to make alternative arrangements following these mindless attacks.

“I would urge young people not to engage in this kind of activity and ask parents to make sure their children are not involved in these attacks.”

He added: “This is not the first time we have seen services withdrawn in the Shantallow area and the local community are sick and tired of their lives being disrupted in this way.

“Bus drivers are public servants and they have the right to feel safe when doing their jobs. Nobody should be subjected to attacks of this nature. All being well, these services will return next Monday and the SDLP will continue working with Translink and on the ground in the area to ensure that these attacks come to an end so that people can avail of these important public transport services.”

Sinn Fein councillor Sandra Duffy said that last week snow balls and ice were thrown at buses and this week it was “muck bombs”.

She added: “This isn’t funny, it’s not a bit of craic, it is in fact dangerous and frightening for motorists.

“It has now completely inconvenienced the community and left much of the area without a bus service.”

She added: “This is really disappointing news for the local area that depend on the bus service – again I appeal to parents to talk to your children and young people to stop attacking services that are vital for our community.”
