In December, it was confirmed that Warburton Bridge Road, from its junction with Manchester Road to its junction with Paddock Lane, would be closed.
Driving will be prohibited on the road from January 6, 2025, for a period of four weeks, but this has now been extended.
A statement on the Warburton Toll Bridge website states: “Following recent inspections by our third-party contractors, additional repair work has been identified to ensure the bridge meets safe standards for all users.
“Additionally, extreme weather has impacted progress.
“As a result, the completion date has been extended from January 16 to January 21, with night closures now scheduled from January 22 to January 27.
“We appreciate your understanding as we work to complete these essential repairs.”
A Warrington Borough Council spokesman previously said: “Access will be under the control of the relevant contractor for the duration of the works.
“The closure is required to allow for carriageway resurfacing works to take place.”
The work comes following a lengthy battle between residents, councillors and development company Peel Ports over plans to modernise the bridge – with the latter revealing it will be hiking the toll charge in the process.
It was confirmed in October last year that the existing 12p toll, set by an Act of Parliament in 1863, would increase to £1, which it was said would cover the costs of the work and any future work required.
Proposals were accepted by the Secretary of State, but residents and Warrington Borough Council objected to the toll increasing by 733.33 per cent.
