Staff at healthcare facilities including Caithness General Hospital are going through a “very trying time” of high demand, according to NHS Highland.

Accident and emergency waiting times are likely to be “much longer than usual” as a consequence.

A spokesperson for the health board said on Friday: “Similar to other areas across Scotland and the UK, we are experiencing high levels of demand across all of our services which can result in waiting times in A&E being much longer than usual.

“Our staff have worked incredibly hard to ensure safe, person-centred and effective care during what is a very trying time for health and social care.

“We are always looking at ways we can improve our patient experience and prioritise those with the greatest clinical need.

“To ensure patients have the fastest access to the treatment they need, if you think you need to attend A&E, but it is not life or limb-threatening, call NHS 24 on 111.

“Our Flow Navigation Service works closely with NHS 24 to ensure you are directed to the most appropriate care. This can include signposting to appropriate alternatives such as community pharmacy, local GP practice, minor injuries units and physiotherapy as well as giving support and advice for self-care options.”
