What everyone wants to see in Hall Green after beloved supermarket shuts

After the Waitrose supermarket in Hall Green shut its doors for the final time, several Birmingham residents had their say on what the site should be next. And everyone is saying the same thing.

On January 13, Waitrose closed on Stratford Road, bringing an end to a shop which opened in 1971. The week before, Waitrose began the process of closure, removing its meat and fish counter and taking down the branded sign.

For some, it marked ‘a disappointing end’ to over 50 years of memories. With the future of the site unknown, BirminghamLive asked Waitrose shoppers what they would like to see replace the supermarket.

Liam Dodd said: “Ideally, it might be nice to have a Marks & Spencer food hall down here. That would go down really well.

“They always serve good food and it’s a fairly decent supermarket.

Noel Dunne said: “There’s one down in Moseley, but if there was an M&S food hall here, I’d be happy.

“I do shop there but I also find the Waitrose range more affordable. You would need something here that the community can access.

“I couldn’t think of anything else suitable apart from knocking it all down.”

Colin Coley added: “A M&S food hall would do, I shop there a bit.”

And Anna Dodd commented: “The only other option besides an M&S Food Hall would be to build houses on the site. But I’m against that.”

For Hall Green residents, the nearest Waitrose is now in Solihull, located on 29 Homer Rd. The nearest M&S Food Hall is currently in Moseley.
