Where to go if you have nowhere to keep warm in Huddersfield and Kirklees

A week of freezing cold weather is looming for Yorkshire – making those already struggling even more vulnerable.

With an amber warning already in place this weekend, and cold temperatures across Kirklees and the rest of Yorkshire, it is going to be hard to keep safe and warm. Energy bills also remain high, and so many may be struggling to afford keeping the heating on.

Whatever the reason, for those who need help to find warmth, there are a number of ‘warm spaces’ across Huddersfield, Kirklees and the rest of the country where they can seek refuge and comfort.

These ‘warm spaces’ are part of the ‘Warm Welcome Space’ campaign which aims to set up these places across the country as welcoming community places. In these places the heating is on to keep anyone who needs it warm during the cold winter months.

Kirklees Council said: “Warm spaces are friendly and comfortable places where you can keep warm and be with other people.”

According to the council, all libraries in Kirklees are warm spaces where “everyone is welcome”. The libraries are all heated and there is seating and furniture for study or computer use. The libraries have:

  • A warm and comfortable environment
  • Free wi-fi
  • Free access to computers
  • Free books
  • Free events and activities
  • Support and advice
  • Friendly and helpful staff

Apart from libraries, there are a number of community organisations which offer warm spaces in the district. These range from community centres to cafés and community hubs.

Many of these offer more than just a warm environment, and can offer you support and advice with money, bills or food. You can find your closest warm space here.
