Worcester care home visited from Humboldt penguins

Fernhill House, part of the Berkley Care Group, welcomed Widget, aged eight, and Pringle, aged 10, from Heythrop Zoological Gardens as a Christmas treat.

Humboldts are medium-sized penguins native to South America, predominantly found along the coasts of Peru and northern Chile.

Residents looked overjoyed by the chance to interact with them, having never been so close to penguins before.

To ensure everyone’s safety and the penguins’ comfort, the handlers provided clear instructions on how to interact with them.

Residents remained seated while the penguin handlers allowed them to take turns with the birds on their laps.

The penguins waddled through the home to make sure that all residents, including those with dementia and other complex needs, had the opportunity to meet them.

The visit was carefully timed to last about an hour, with the penguins well-fed on fish and kept comfortable throughout.

The waddling duo, Widget and Pringle, are experienced in community visits and created some memories for both residents and staff alike.

Lucy Downes, the home’s activities coordinator, said: “We couldn’t be happier to have hosted such a unique event for our residents.

“Watching their faces light up with joy and hearing the laughter as Widget and Pringle made their rounds was incredibly moving.

“This visit was special because it brought some of our more reserved residents out of their shells, encouraging them to engage and connect with others.

“It’s a perfect example of how meaningful and memorable experiences can enrich the lives of everyone here.

“We’re already thinking about what other exciting opportunities we can create in the future to continue bringing happiness and unforgettable moments to our residents’ days.”
